Allostasis (allo = other; stasis ≈ equilibrium) – of, or related to, the process by which an organism has the potential to maintain homeostasis for some given amount of change, through physiological or behavioral modification.  Whereas homeostasis is the current state of the organism, allostasis can be seen as a prediction of how the organism will function as the environment around it changes.
